About Karen L.

Karen L. Rowell earned her Juris Doctor from the College of William and Mary in 2008 after completing undergraduate studies in Family and Child Development at Virginia Tech in 1996. She arrived at law school after a period of professional work and military service. The combination of those experiences shaped an approach to legal practice that blends practical detail with attention to personal circumstances.

Her early career included service in the United States Navy, where she worked as a Cryptologic Technician Interpretive and reached the rank of Petty Officer Second Class in 1997. That time in uniform placed her in demanding, detail-driven roles and provided experience in working under pressure. After law school she entered private practice and began working at Layman & Nichols, P.C. in 2008. She was admitted to the Virginia bar the same year and has practiced in the state since then.

Rowell holds certification from the Supreme Court of Virginia as a guardian ad litem for incapacitated adults. That credential informs much of her casework. She has been a member of the Virginia chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys since 2010, a professional affiliation that reflects an ongoing interest in legal issues affecting older adults and vulnerable populations.

Throughout her career she has handled matters that touch on the legal protections and decision-making rights of adults with diminished capacity. Her work has included guardianship proceedings and related advocacy. Colleagues and clients have relied on her experience in navigating Virginia’s procedures for appointment of guardians and addressing the practical consequences those appointments bring for families and institutions.

Rowell’s practice has moved through several settings. After her start at Layman & Nichols she continued in private practice and now practices at Clark & Bradshaw, P.C. There she combines litigation experience with court-appointed responsibilities when serving as a guardian ad litem. Her background in family and child development informs how she evaluates needs and supports clients through sensitive matters.

She is active in the elder law community and maintains professional ties through membership in NAELA’s Virginia chapter. Her career reflects a steady engagement with cases that require both legal precision and an eye for the human dimensions of capacity, care, and oversight. She currently practices at Clark & Bradshaw, P.C., handling elder law, guardianship and related matters.
