About K. David
K. David Crockett built a technical foundation before he ever set foot in a courtroom. He completed a B.A. in mathematics at Rutgers College in 1982, then went on to the Navy Nuclear Power School, finishing its graduate curriculum in nuclear physics and reactor operations in 1984. The combination of math and rigorous technical training preceded his decision to study law.
He earned his J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law in 1991. During law school he served on the San Diego Law Review and received recognition in clinical and constitutional work, taking the Outstanding Legal Clinic Student Award for 1990–1991 and the George W. Hickman Award for Excellence in Constitutional Law. Those honors reflected an ability to handle both practical client work and complex doctrinal issues.
Crockett’s background is unusually technical for a lawyer. The Navy Nuclear Power School is an intensive program in reactor operations and physics. Combined with a mathematics degree, it gave him a fluency in technical concepts that many law clients find useful. He translated that fluency into legal practice after law school and maintained involvement with matters that intersect engineering, technology, and federal law.
He is admitted to practice in California, is admitted to the Federal Circuit, and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Those credentials allow him to handle matters that range from federal appeals to patent prosecution and related proceedings at the USPTO. His work has required both statutory analysis and detailed technical explanation written for judges, examiners, or opposing counsel.
Colleagues describe him as methodical in his approach. He breaks down technical problems into discrete legal questions. He writes carefully and argues tightly, preferring clarity over flourish. That style served him in clinical work at USD and in subsequent practice where the intersection of law and technology often demands precision.
Over the years he has combined technical training, legal scholarship, and courtroom and administrative practice. He continues to maintain an active legal practice in California, handling intellectual property and appellate matters and proceedings before the Federal Circuit and the USPTO.
