About Justin Cody

Justin Cody Hunt built his legal identity at the intersection of criminal law and international study. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Global Studies from the University of Kansas in 2011. He then went on to earn his Juris Doctor from Santa Clara University School of Law in 2014, where his coursework included criminal law and international criminal law.

After law school, Hunt entered practice in matters that drew on both his classroom training and an interest in contested fact patterns. He has practiced in California and Missouri, and those dual admissions have allowed him to handle cases in two very different legal landscapes. His work has included courtroom appearances and pretrial advocacy, where he has sought to advance clients’ procedural and substantive rights.

Hunt’s early studies in international criminal law inform how he approaches complex criminal matters. He pays attention to procedure and to the details that can change the course of a case. He is experienced in drafting motions, arguing evidentiary disputes and managing the discovery process. Colleagues describe him as methodical in preparation and direct in court.

Throughout his career he has represented clients in a range of criminal matters. He has worked on cases involving state-level charges and has navigated the practical differences between practice in California and practice in Missouri courts. His approach emphasizes careful analysis of the record, attention to statutory elements and a willingness to confront difficult legal questions at hearings and trials.

Hunt has also kept an interest in the broader contexts that shape criminal cases. His undergraduate study in global issues and subsequent legal education introduced him to comparative perspectives on law. That background informs his view of defense practice as both technical and human, where legal rules meet the pressures of real lives.

Today he is based at K.C. Defense Counsel, LLC. He continues to appear in courts across Missouri and California as matters require. He handles trial preparation, pretrial motions and courtroom advocacy, and his current practice focuses on criminal defense at K.C. Defense Counsel, LLC.
