About Justin

Justin Baumli combines a technical undergraduate education with a law degree from a national law school. He earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 2006 and later received his J.D. from New York University School of Law in 2012. Those credentials give him a grounding in both engineering principles and legal analysis.

After law school, Baumli pursued a practice that involves litigation in state and federal forums. He is admitted to practice in California and before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. His admission to the federal court there places him where many technology and commercial disputes are heard.

Baumli has worked at Fenwick & West LLP. At that firm, his work has placed him on matters that require translating technical concepts into legal strategy, assessing expert evidence, and preparing filings for court. His engineering background often comes into play when cases raise technical or mechanical questions. He is comfortable handling procedural and substantive stages of litigation, from pleadings and discovery through motions practice.

Colleagues describe Baumli as methodical in courtroom preparation and deliberate in written advocacy. He tends to break down complex issues into discrete elements for juries or judges. He also spends time preparing technical explanations that do not assume a legal audience already understands the subject matter. That approach is useful in cases that involve invention, product design, or specialized processes.

Outside the courtroom, Baumli has continued to engage with the technical side of disputes by reviewing designs, interrogatory responses, and expert reports. Those tasks require careful attention to the factual record and clear communication across professional disciplines. He also navigates the procedural demands of both state and federal practice, ensuring pleadings and filings comply with local rules.

He remains based at Fenwick & West LLP and maintains active admissions in California and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. He currently represents clients in matters before California courts and in the Northern District of California federal courts, applying his combined engineering and legal training to technical and commercial disputes.
