About Joshua
Joshua Schoonover works at the intersection of invention and the law. He represents inventors, start-ups and established companies on matters tied to patent protection. His approach is straightforward. He aims to translate technical concepts into patent filings that meet legal requirements and practical business needs.
He completed formal legal education before entering practice. Early in his career he gravitated toward intellectual property matters and the technical demands they place on written work. Over time he developed familiarity with the procedures and deadlines that govern patent prosecution and the preparation of patent applications. Those skills shaped his day-to-day work and his view of what clients need from outside counsel: practical answers and reliable filings.
Throughout his practice he has handled patent preparation and prosecution, patentability assessments and opinions, and patent portfolio management. He prepares patent applications for submission to the United States Patent and Trademark Office and provides counseling on how best to structure inventions for protection. He also assists clients in evaluating existing patent portfolios and in developing strategies that reflect both legal risk and commercial priorities. He supports litigation teams by preparing technical analyses and claim charts when those services are required.
He maintains current memberships in professional associations relevant to intellectual property practice. Those memberships keep him connected to peers and to developments in patent law and examination practice. He uses that exchange of information to refine how he drafts claims and addresses office actions, and to stay current on procedural changes at the USPTO.
Schoonover is based at Coastal Patent Law Group, P.C. He works alongside patent agents, attorneys and technical advisors to serve clients across a range of technologies. Daily work can vary from drafting detailed specifications to advising on prosecution strategies that align with a client’s product roadmap. He concentrates on helping clients convert technical innovation into enforceable patent rights.
In his current practice he focuses on patent prosecution, portfolio counseling and technical patent support for inventors and businesses.
