About Joshua

Joshua Bannister blends a military background, clinical training and private practice into a steady legal presence in upstate New York. He approaches cases practically and speaks plainly. Clients, colleagues and courtroom staff recognize a lawyer who arrived at the law from a different path.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in Bible from Lancaster Bible College in 2002. Years later he returned to school and completed his Juris Doctor at Western Michigan University Cooley Law School, receiving the degree in 2015. Those two degrees frame an unusual trajectory: one rooted in religious studies and the other in law.

Before law school, Bannister served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and held the rank of captain beginning in 2003. That service shaped his early career and contributed to the leadership and discipline he brought to his legal studies and subsequent work.

During law school he gained hands-on courtroom experience as a student lawyer. In 2014 he worked with the Washtenaw County Public Defender and later that year served with the Oneida County Public Defender. Those placements put him in courtrooms and client interviews under supervising attorneys, and they provided a practical grounding in defense work.

After completing his legal education he opened The Bannister Law Office, PLLC in 2015 and has practiced from that platform since. He is a member of the Herkimer County Bar Association and an associate member of the Oneida County Bar Association, memberships he has held since 2015. The combination of public defender clinic work and private practice gives him familiarity with local procedures and courtroom dynamics in the communities where he works.

Bannister is admitted to practice in New York and handles matters that reflect his background in criminal defense and trial work. He represents individuals in local courts and manages cases from initial arraignment through disposition. His approach is straightforward: evaluate the facts, identify options, and present arguments to judges and juries when necessary. He maintains his practice at The Bannister Law Office, PLLC, where he focuses on criminal defense and related court work in New York.
