About Joseph S.
Joseph S. Belichick built an unusual academic path before entering the law. He earned a B.A. in American Studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1991. He continued into the humanities and completed an M.A. in Mythological Studies and Depth Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute in 1997. He returned to legal studies and received a J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law in 2003.
The combination of humanities and legal education shapes how he approaches legal problems. Those early studies emphasized narrative, context and critical reading. The law degree added doctrinal training and courtroom procedure. Together, they have formed a framework he applies to complex litigation and procedural challenges.
His admissions reflect a practice that spans both state and federal systems. He is admitted to the California bar and holds federal admissions that include the U.S. District Courts for the Central, Northern, Eastern and Southern Districts of California, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, the Federal Circuit and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. The list indicates regular work in trial courts and appellate matters across multiple jurisdictions.
Belichick is associated with Fenwick & West LLP. His work at the firm places him in a practice setting that often involves multi-district proceedings and federal litigation. He has experience coordinating filings and appearances across district courts and handling appeals when cases progress beyond the trial level.
Colleagues describe his style as methodical. He tends to break large problems into discrete questions and to trace issues back to precedent. That approach can be useful in litigation that raises technical or procedural disputes across different courts. He also brings the research skills honed in graduate study to brief writing and oral argument preparation.
Outside the courtroom his background in American studies and depth psychology gives him a different perspective on client narratives and dispute resolution. He has used that perspective when analyzing case themes and preparing witnesses. The result is a practice that blends textual analysis with the procedural mechanics of litigation.
He currently practices at Fenwick & West LLP and is active in matters in California and federal courts. His current practice focuses on litigation in California and federal courts.
