About Joseph Mariner
Joseph Mariner Gerstenzang earned his J.D. from Albany Law School in 2011 after completing a B.A. at Boston University in 2003. His legal education placed him in New York soon after law school, where he has built a practice centered on criminal defense. He remained in the region after graduation and moved quickly into private practice.
Gerstenzang joined Gerstenzang, Sills, Cohn & Gerstenzang and became a partner there in 2012. He practices in New York and has maintained memberships in a range of professional organizations: the New York State Bar Association since 2012, the American Bar Association, the Albany County Bar Association and the New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He is also affiliated with the National College for DUI Defense and serves on its faculty.
Serving on the faculty of the National College for DUI Defense adds a teaching dimension to his work. In that role he participates in educational programs for other defense lawyers, sharing courtroom techniques and practical approaches to impaired-driving cases. His involvement in professional groups gives him regular exposure to evolving law and procedure in criminal and DUI practice.
In court he represents clients charged in a range of criminal matters. He handles cases from arraignment through trial and sentencing. He also works on pretrial motions, evidentiary disputes and negotiations when a client’s circumstances make resolution outside of trial appropriate. Colleagues describe him as a lawyer who spends time preparing cases and attending court proceedings across New York.
Outside the courtroom he remains active in local and national bar activities. His membership in the Albany County Bar Association keeps him connected to the regional legal community. Participation in the American Bar Association and the New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers provides broader perspectives on criminal law trends and professional practice. He combines trial work, teaching and association activity in his day-to-day practice.
He is a partner at Gerstenzang, Sills, Cohn & Gerstenzang and represents clients in criminal and DUI matters in New York.
