About Derrick

Derrick Hogan built a steady legal career that moves between public service and private practice. He studied history as an undergraduate, then went on to law school before joining a regional firm where he rose through the ranks to partnership.

He earned a B.A. in history from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 2001. After a few years in the region, he enrolled at Albany Law School, completing his J.D. in 2008. Those years established the academic foundation he later brought to public-sector and firm work.

Early in his legal training Hogan worked in local government legal offices. In 2006 he served as an intern in the Schenectady County law office. The following year he worked as a legal aide at the New York State Attorney General’s office. Those positions exposed him to government practice and the mechanics of public law early in his career.

Hogan joined Tully Rinckey PLLC in 2009, first as a law clerk and then as an associate. He took on a client relations lawyer and manager role in 2010, a position that combined case handling with overseeing client communication and intake systems. Over the next several years he continued to practice at the firm and was named a partner in 2017. His trajectory at Tully Rinckey ties years of hands-on client work to leadership responsibilities inside the firm.

Outside of practice, Hogan is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, an honor society he joined in 2005. He maintains professional ties in the New York legal community and has remained based in the state where he is licensed to practice.

Colleagues describe his career as grounded in steady progression rather than sudden leaps. He has moved from internships and public-service roles into sustained firm practice. That path gave him experience on both sides of client problems—public-sector structures and private-client needs.

Today Hogan is a partner at Tully Rinckey PLLC in New York. He practices law at the firm and continues to work on matters for its clients, combining his earlier public-sector exposure with long-term firm experience.
