About Joseph M
Joseph M Wiltse built a steady legal trajectory that begins in the classroom and runs through several South Dakota law firms. He earned his J.D. from the University of South Dakota School of Law in 2014. Before that he completed a B.A. at the University of Sioux Falls in 2010, studying political science, communication studies and theatre.
While still in law school, Wiltse gained hands-on exposure to firm practice. He served as a law clerk at Hagen, Wilka & Archer, LLP in 2013. That position gave him early experience in research, drafting and client file work. After graduating, he transitioned to an associate role at the same firm in 2014 and continued to build practical courtroom and office experience.
Wiltse’s career moved through a mix of small and larger firm environments. In 2016 he spent time as an associate at Swier Law Office, Prof. LLC. Later that year he joined Lindquist & Vennum LLP, a firm that subsequently became part of Ballard Spahr LLP. Those moves exposed him to a broader clientele and to the operational differences between regional and national firms.
Across these roles, Wiltse’s work has involved typical tasks of early-career private practice lawyers: legal research, drafting motions and contracts, preparing discovery, counseling clients and supporting litigation. He has performed work inside and outside the courtroom and handled matters that required coordinating with opposing counsel, court personnel and expert witnesses. Colleagues describe him as steady in case preparation and attentive to procedural detail.
He is admitted to practice in South Dakota and maintains professional memberships in local legal circles. His background in political science and communication complements his courtroom tasks, and his theatre studies have been a resource when presenting argument or examining witnesses. He has balanced the procedural demands of litigation with client-facing responsibilities throughout his career.
Today Wiltse is part of Ballard Spahr LLP’s team in South Dakota. He continues to practice at the firm, where he concentrates on litigation and related client counseling work in state and federal matters.
