About Joseph
Joseph Hanyon trained in three complementary fields at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, earning B.A. degrees in economics, politics and philosophy in 1984. He went on to receive his J.D. from New York Law School in 1986 and completed an LL.M. in law at Temple University in 1990. His academic path combined practical legal training with broader studies in public policy and analysis.
After law school, Hanyon entered private practice and public service roles that exposed him to municipal issues and courtroom work. He worked as an associate at Leshanki & O Sullivan in 1988 and joined the New York Law School Litigation Clinic in 1989. In 1990 he established a solo practice under the Law Offices of Joseph P. Hanyon and began serving as special zoning solicitor for Chestnuthill Township in Monroe County, Pennsylvania. Those early roles placed him at the intersection of local government decision-making and client advocacy.
Hanyon later became a partner at MHK Lawyers, a firm that lists an office in Pocono Summit. His title there is recorded as lawyer/partner beginning in 1997. In 1998 he spent time as a law clerk with the New York City Department of Finance, work that added an administrative perspective to his legal background and touched on regulatory and fiscal issues handled by municipal agencies.
Across more than three decades, Hanyon has maintained a professional presence in Pennsylvania. He joined the Monroe County Bar Association in 1990 and remains a member. That longtime membership reflects sustained engagement with the local legal community and the kinds of municipal and county matters that often occupy small-firm practitioners in the region.
The pattern of Hanyon’s career shows a mix of private practice, government service and advisory roles for local government. His work as a township zoning solicitor and his litigation clinic experience point to steady involvement in land use and civil litigation matters, while the stint at the Department of Finance added an administrative law dimension.
He currently practices at MHK Lawyers in Pocono Summit, where his work centers on municipal zoning, local government matters and general civil practice.
