About Joseph E.
Joseph E. Carey has practiced law in Maryland for decades. He earned his J.D. from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law in 1980 and went into private practice soon after. He set up his own firm the next year and has maintained a steady presence in the local legal community since then.
He graduated from law school in 1980. That credential opened doors to both trial and appellate work. Early on he chose to build a practice that could handle contested matters in state courts and take cases beyond the trial level when necessary.
In 1981 he founded Carey Law Office, LLC. Starting a small firm allowed him to shape the practice from the ground up. Over the years the office has handled a range of matters and represented individuals and businesses in proceedings across Maryland.
Carey is admitted to the Maryland bar and is also authorized to appear before the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Those admissions reflect a practice that includes appellate litigation as well as cases that originate in trial courts. He has pursued matters at different levels of the judicial system when clients’ needs required it.
His work at the firm has combined courtroom representation and client counseling. He has taken cases to trial and pursued appeals when warranted. He manages case strategy, supervises filings, and handles court appearances, while overseeing the day-to-day operations of his office.
Colleagues and clients describe him as someone who keeps an eye on procedural detail and on deadlines. He has run the firm through changes in the legal landscape and continued to serve clients whose matters required both trial advocacy and appellate review. He has remained based in Maryland and kept the office open to local matters as well as cases that involved federal appellate work.
As of 2026 he continues to lead Carey Law Office, LLC and to represent clients in state and federal courts. His current practice focuses on litigation and appellate matters handled through his Maryland firm.
