About Joseph Carter
Joseph Carter Maher earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law in 2012. He arrived at law school after undergraduate studies and completed the program amid a changing legal landscape in Colorado. The degree set the stage for courtroom work and a steady orientation toward criminal practice.
Early in his career he worked as an El Paso County district lawyer beginning in 2012. That role placed him inside the local justice system at a time when DUI and criminal cases were drawing increased public attention. He handled matters that required courtroom appearances, client interviews and coordination with law enforcement, experience that later informed his approach in private practice.
In 2017 he opened Maher & Maher Law PC. The firm grew out of his experience in county-level work and a desire to represent individuals facing criminal charges. Over the years the practice has taken cases in state courts across Colorado. He maintains memberships in the El Paso County Bar Association and the Colorado Bar Association. He is also a member of professional groups that concentrate on criminal and DUI defense, including the National College of DUI Defense, the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar Association and the DUI Defense Lawyer Association.
His practice centers on criminal defense and DUI matters. He handles pretrial hearings, negotiations and trials. Cases range from first-time DUI charges to more serious criminal allegations. He draws on courtroom experience from his early public-sector work and years in private practice. He prepares motions, examines evidence and represents clients at bond and sentencing hearings when needed.
Colleagues and peers have recognized him through sustained participation in specialty associations. Those memberships reflect a professional interest in the technical and procedural aspects of DUI defense. He attends seminars and participates in continuing legal education tied to criminal and DUI practice. That ongoing work shapes how he assesses breath and blood evidence, field sobriety testing and related forensic issues.
He practices in Colorado and handles matters in both trial and appellate settings when appropriate. He balances litigation work with client counseling, aiming to explain options clearly and to move cases through the system efficiently. His current practice focuses on defending people charged with DUI and other criminal offenses in Colorado courts.
