About Jonathan
Jonathan Turner built his path to the courtroom over three decades. He moved from undergraduate studies in business into a law degree, and then into a mix of public prosecution and private practice that has shaped how he approaches criminal matters. The arc of his career is straightforward and steady, marked by long stretches in both trial work and client representation.
He began his postsecondary studies at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, taking business courses in 1985. He completed a Bachelor of Science in finance at the University of South Carolina in 1987. He then attended the University of Virginia School of Law, earning his J.D. in 1990. Those years gave him a foundation in both financial and legal thinking.
Turner entered the courtroom as a prosecutor. In 1994 he joined the Halifax Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office as an assistant commonwealth’s attorney. Three years later he advanced to deputy commonwealth’s attorney, a role he held beginning in 1997. Those years in the prosecutor’s office gave him frequent jury experience and regular work on criminal cases at the local level.
In 2013 he opened his own practice, listed as Jonathan W. Turner, Lawyer, where he serves as owner and lead lawyer. Establishing the practice shifted his daily responsibilities from public office to representing individuals and managing a small firm. The change also meant taking on the tasks of running a business alongside courtroom work.
Turner maintains memberships in several professional groups. He has been a member of the Virginia State Bar since 1993. He joined the Tennessee Bar Association after forming his practice in Tennessee in 2013. In 2017 he became a member of the American Society of Legal Advocates and the National Advocacy for DUI Defense, and those affiliations continue.
His work draws on years of trial experience on both sides of the courtroom. He handles criminal defense matters and frequently represents clients in DUI cases. He also addresses related pretrial and motion practice and prepares cases for trial when settlement is not an option. Former prosecutorial work informs how he evaluates evidence and prepares witnesses.
Turner splits his professional activity across Virginia and Tennessee, where he remains licensed and active. He runs his own office and accepts cases that reflect the blend of prosecution experience and defense practice that has characterized his career. Currently he focuses on criminal defense and DUI representation in state courts.
