About Jonathan
Jonathan Shapiro earned his J.D. from American University Washington College of Law in 1974. He began building a legal career in Virginia that has spanned decades. His early academic credential set the stage for work in courts and classrooms alike.
Shapiro is a partner at Greenspun Shapiro PC. He has held that role for many years, handling cases at trial and advising clients on criminal matters. In 2009 he took on a teaching post as a Professor of Practice at Washington & Lee University School of Law. His time in the classroom has run alongside his work in practice rather than replacing it.
Peers have recognized his trial work. He became a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers in 2008, a professional mark that reflects experience trying cases. He has also been active in bar groups and professional organizations. He served as co-chair of the Criminal Law Committee of the Alexandria Bar Association from 1994 to 2005. From 2006 to 2010 he belonged to the Virginia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He currently holds membership in the Fairfax Bar Association and acts as a cooperating lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union.
Shapiro’s work centers on courtroom practice and case preparation. He handles criminal defense matters and represents clients in hearings and trials. He has taken on cases that involve constitutional and civil liberties questions in addition to more routine criminal charges. He is experienced in jury trials and in the procedural work that precedes them. His dual roles as educator and practitioner have given him repeated opportunities to explain legal strategy to students and clients alike.
He maintains a law office in Fairfax and continues to lead cases at Greenspun Shapiro PC. He represents individuals in criminal defense and related constitutional matters in Virginia, and he remains active in both bar activities and public-interest legal work.
