About Jonathan Goldsmith

Jonathan Goldsmith Cohen built a legal life around one of the more technical corners of the law. He studied at Vermont Law School and moved into practice that tests both analytic precision and practical judgment. His training there prepared him for a career that has centered on bankruptcy and creditor-debtor work.

Cohen's name became attached to a regional practice when he was named Director of Bankruptcy Practice at I. Mark Cohen Law Group in 2009. In that role he took on case oversight, supervision of younger attorneys, and the procedural work that bankruptcy courts demand. The appointment marked a shift from the routine tasks of a young lawyer to managing a docket and advising clients in contested and negotiated settings.

Authorized to practice in New Jersey, Cohen has kept his work state-focused. He has handled matters that arise out of business reorganizations, insolvency disputes and consumer bankruptcies. He has represented clients in court filings, creditors’ meetings and creditor negotiations. The work combines paperwork, court deadlines and, at times, contested hearings.

Outside of litigation, Cohen has remained active in the local bar. He serves as a trustee of the Monmouth County Bar Association. In that volunteer capacity he takes part in organizational discussions and programs aimed at the local legal community. The trustee role places him in contact with judges, fellow counsel and local practitioners who shape the county’s legal calendar.

Peers and clients describe Cohen’s practice as methodical. He tends to the procedural details that bankruptcy proceedings require and plans the litigation or negotiation steps that follow. He is comfortable in court and in settlement meetings. His practice requires both a command of statutory deadlines and the ability to explain complex filings to people facing financial distress.

Cohen maintains an office at I. Mark Cohen Law Group. He continues to accept matters in New Jersey, handling bankruptcy cases and related creditor-debtor issues for individuals and businesses. He handles bankruptcy matters and related creditor-debtor issues in New Jersey.
