About John Townsend
John Townsend Cooper built his academic foundation at the College of Charleston, where he earned a B.S. in Biology in 2000 after beginning his studies in 1998. He shifted toward the law a few years later, enrolling at Charleston School of Law in 2004 and completing his J.D. in 2007. The combination of a science background and legal training shaped a methodical approach to problem solving early in his career.
After law school he became a shareholder at Cooper & Bilbrey, P.C. in 2007. That role placed him in a small-firm environment where attorneys handle a wide range of matters and client expectations are immediate. Over time Cooper developed experience in both trial and appellate settings. He is admitted to practice in South Carolina and in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, which allows him to carry matters through different levels of the judicial system.
Cooper’s work has required attention to procedural detail and to the record developed at trial. He has handled filings and argued matters in state and federal venues. He also maintains current membership in professional organizations, participating in the bar community and related networks that support courtroom practice. Peers describe his courtroom approach as steady and direct. He tends to prioritize clarity in pleadings and oral argument.
Today he continues to practice from Cooper & Bilbrey, P.C. The firm handles a variety of disputes that reach both the trial and appellate stages. Cooper represents clients in matters that proceed in South Carolina state courts and in appeals heard by the Fourth Circuit. His current practice concentrates on litigation and appellate work in those jurisdictions.
