About John S.
John S. Koda trained first as a generalist in the liberal arts before turning to law. He earned a B.A. from Purdue University in 1984 and completed his J.D. at the University of Florida College of Law in 1989. Those years set the stage for a career split between public service and private practice.
He began his professional life in publishing as an associate editor at Medical Publishing Enterprises in 1984. The move from publishing to law followed law school. After admission to the Florida bar in 1989, he entered public service. By 1992 he was serving as senior staff counsel for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. That role involved advising a state agency on regulatory and enforcement matters and exposed him to the intersection of administrative law and consumer protection.
In 1995 Koda joined a private firm as a partner at Boone, Boone, Boone & Koda, P.A. He spent decades in that setting. The work there deepened his experience in business-related matters and civil litigation. It also offered the day-to-day practice of counseling businesses and representing clients in state courts.
In 2018 he moved into of counsel status at Brick Business Law, P.A. His admission to the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida complements his state practice. He has maintained active membership in the Florida State Bar since 1989 and holds memberships in the Florida Bar Association and the Sarasota County Bar Association.
Colleagues describe Koda as pragmatic and steady. He approaches disputes by weighing practical outcomes and procedural options. His time in government gave him an inside view of how agencies handle enforcement. That perspective informs his advice to business clients facing regulatory questions.
Koda’s career shows a steady progression from staff counsel to firm partner and then to of counsel at a business-focused firm. He has balanced courtroom experience with advisory work. He has also balanced long-term client relationships with sporadic litigation.
He keeps a local practice base while remaining able to take on matters in federal court when needed. He is licensed in Florida and in the Middle District of Florida. His current practice centers on business law, regulatory matters, and litigation.
