About John S. Grant
John S. Grant IV is an attorney who built a steady path from law school to private practice. He earned his J.D. from the University of Mississippi in 2006 after completing a B.A. at Mississippi State University in 2002. Those years provided the legal grounding that underpins his later work in appellate matters and courtroom practice.
Early in his career he served as a law clerk in 2009 to James D. Maxwell, II. That role exposed him to trial preparation and opinion drafting at close range. In 2012 he joined the Mississippi Court of Appeals as an editor of opinions. That position offered a front-row view of how appellate courts analyze and frame legal questions. It also shaped his sense of how appellate briefing and record development matter to outcomes.
He moved into private practice in 2018 as an associate at Shows Law Office PLLC. Over the next two years he expanded his role there and, in 2020, became an equity-owning member of the firm. Those years in a mid-sized practice added client-facing work and courtroom experience to the appellate perspective he had gained in the public sector.
In 2022 he founded Grant Legal Group, PA and serves as the firm’s founding lawyer. The firm represents clients in matters that draw on his appellate background and his experience handling cases through final judgment. He handles written advocacy, oral argument preparation, and post-judgment proceedings. His path from court staff to firm owner informs how he structures cases and prepares records for appeal.
Grant is admitted to practice in Mississippi and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. He is a member of the Rankin County Bar Association since 2016 and has belonged to the Appellate Practice Section of the Mississippi Bar since 2015. The Mississippi Department of Child Protection Services has approved him to handle adoption finalizations, a certification that permits him to take certain family-law matters to completion where state approval is required.
