About John R.

John R. Bowley built his path to law on an early foundation in journalism. He earned a B.A. in Journalism from Ohio State University–Marion in 1996 and went on to receive his J.D. from The John Marshall Law School in 2001. That combination of investigative training and legal education shaped the way he approaches cases: methodical, evidence-oriented and attentive to how facts read on the page and in court.

After law school Bowley entered private practice and has served as an associate at Asperger Associates, LLC. He practices in both state and federal forums. He is admitted to the Illinois bar, the Illinois Supreme Court and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. In those courts he has taken on matters that require courtroom appearances, motions practice and detailed preparation for hearings and trials.

His background in journalism informs his legal work. He tends to prioritize clear written advocacy and careful development of the factual record. That manifests in pleadings, discovery strategies and trial preparation. Colleagues note that he approaches a file the way a reporter approaches a story: assemble documents, test assumptions, and present findings in a straightforward sequence. He applies those habits to client interviews and to marshaling evidence for judges and juries.

Bowley’s courtroom experience includes appearances in the Northern District of Illinois and in Illinois state courts. He handles procedural and substantive matters that arise in litigation, including contested hearings and dispositive motions. He is comfortable drafting briefs and arguing complex procedural issues. He also assists in managing case calendars, preparing witnesses and coordinating with experts when cases require technical or specialized testimony.

Outside of litigation tasks he contributes to firm workflow by organizing case files and preparing the materials that other attorneys rely on when matters escalate. His training in journalism makes him conversant with the demands of clear, concise writing under time pressure. He brings that competence to client communications, court filings and internal case memoranda.

Today Bowley continues to work at Asperger Associates, LLC, representing clients in Illinois courts and in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. His present practice focuses on litigation and courtroom representation in those jurisdictions.
