About John P.
John P. Buza began his academic path at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 2004. He continued his studies at New York Law School and received his J.D. in 2008. Those formative years placed him in New York City during a period of significant change in criminal procedure and litigation practice.
After law school Buza moved into courtroom practice. He gained admission to practice in New York and New Jersey and to the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. Over time he built a practice centered on criminal matters in both state and federal forums.
Buza founded his own practice and has served as Principal of the Law Office of John Buza, P.C. since 2014. Running a small firm means handling all stages of a case. He prepares motions, argues in court and negotiates resolutions. The firm roster reflects a steady stream of misdemeanor and felony cases, as well as federal matters handled in the district courts that admitted him.
Professional association memberships have been a consistent part of his career. He has belonged to the New York County Lawyers Association since 2009. He joined the New York City Bar Association and the New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers in 2014. He is also a member of the New York Criminal Bar Association, a membership he took on in 2015 and maintains currently. Those affiliations keep him connected to developments in criminal law and trial practice.
Colleagues describe Buza as practical and direct in court. He files standard criminal motions and defends clients in arraignments, pretrial hearings and trials. He has experience handling plea discussions as well as contested evidentiary matters. His work spans state and federal procedural rules and the tactical choices those rules require.
Outside the courtroom he manages the business side of a small law office. That includes client intake, case management and coordinating with investigators and experts when cases demand it. He has maintained the principal role at his firm for over a decade.
He practices criminal defense in New York and New Jersey, representing clients at all stages of the criminal process. He currently concentrates his practice on criminal defense in state and federal courts.
