About John
John Laurence trained first as an engineer and later turned that technical grounding into a career in intellectual property law. He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Polytechnic University of New York, a J.D. from New York Law School and an LL.M. in Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law from Fordham University School of Law. Those degrees shape how he evaluates inventions and advises clients on the patent process.
Laurence began his legal career in private practice. He worked as an associate at Cowan, Liebowitz & Latman beginning in 2008 and later took an associate role at Scarinci Hollenbeck in 2012. He moved into in-house and senior counsel work, serving as Senior Patent Counsel at Warshaw Burstein, LLP in 2019. That same year he also established TCP Law, PLLC, where he is listed as owner and intellectual property lawyer. In 2023 he spent time as an intellectual property lawyer at Flaster Greenberg PC. Across those roles he balanced client-side and firm-side responsibilities.
He is a registered patent lawyer with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and has been a member of the State Bar of New York since 2008. Those credentials allow him to file and prosecute patent applications before the USPTO and to advise on U.S. patent strategy. His background in electrical engineering informs his work on technical inventions and patent drafting.
Laurence’s practice has covered the practical tasks that accompany patent work. He has prepared and prosecuted patent applications, handled patentability assessments, and advised on portfolio management and clearance issues. He also assists clients on trademark matters and on counseling related to intellectual property rights. Past positions placed him on teams handling prosecution, opinion work and patent counseling for businesses and individual inventors.
Colleagues describe Laurence as a practitioner who brings technical literacy to routine patent tasks. He approaches claims drafting with attention to detail and treats examiner interactions as negotiations that can be steered through careful amendment and argument. He draws on both firm experience and in-house perspective when advising on budget and prosecution strategy.
He maintains an active practice through TCP Law, PLLC, where he handles patent prosecution and client counseling on intellectual property matters.
