About John L.
John L. Roberts began his professional journey in journalism before turning to the law. He earned a B.S. in Journalism from Boston University in 1972, then returned to school to complete a J.D. at Western New England University School of Law in 1986. The switch from reporting to law gave him a different way to work with facts and narratives.
His early legal years were spent in federal clerkships. In 1987 he served as a law clerk at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. The next year he worked at the United States Department of Justice. In 1989 he was a judicial law clerk for the United States District Court. Those roles exposed him to regulatory, appellate and trial-court procedures in quick succession.
In 1991 Roberts opened the Law Office of John L. Roberts and began practicing on his own. Over the following decades he has managed matters that touch on elder law, estate planning and real estate. He is admitted to practice in Connecticut and Massachusetts. He also holds admissions to the First and Second Circuit Courts of Appeal and to the United States Supreme Court.
Roberts has a formal credential in elder law. He is a Certified Elder Law Lawyer through the National Elder Law Foundation, a private organization that the American Bar Association accredits to certify lawyers in that specialty. That certification is one credential among several professional ties that have shaped his practice. He has been a member of the Massachusetts chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys since 2000. He belongs to the Real Estate Bar Association for Massachusetts, also since 2000. His membership in the Hampden County Estate Planning Council dates to 1994, and he has been part of the Hampden County Bar Association Real Estate Section since 2009.
Colleagues and clients frequently note Roberts’s long tenure in practice and his steady presence in local legal organizations. He brings years of federal clerkship experience to cases that often require familiarity with court procedure and agency rules. His work spans counseling, document drafting and courtroom appearances as jurisdictional needs require. He continues to operate his private practice and handles matters in elder law, estate planning and real estate.
