About John Hofmeyer
John Hofmeyer IV trained first as an architect and later as a lawyer. He earned a Bachelor of Architecture from Iowa State University in 2009 after studying architecture, political science and mathematics. He went on to receive his Juris Doctor from the University of Iowa in 2012.
His early resume alternates between design studios and courtrooms. While still completing his architecture studies he worked as a summer architectural intern at OPN Architects and at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. He moved into law-related work during law school, serving as a summer judicial law clerk for the Sixth Judicial District of Iowa and later as a law clerk at the Randy Trca Law Office in 2010.
After law school he held a research lawyer role at Arenson Law Group, PC in 2011 and served of counsel at the Law Offices of John W. Hofmeyer III in 2012. He spent time in industry as vice president and general counsel for Randy s Carpets & Interiors in 2013. By 2014 he was in private practice both as an associate with Arenson Law Group and as a lawyer operating under his own name.
That sequence gives his practice an unusual mix. He has experience in law firm environments, a corporate in-house counsel role and independent practice. The architectural background adds technical familiarity with design and construction processes. The legal positions exposed him to research, litigation support and transactional work. He holds membership in the American Bar Association, the Iowa State Bar Association, and the Wisconsin State Bar Association, and is affiliated with Jefferson Society, Inc.
Hofmeyer is licensed to practice in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Over the years he has moved between clerkships, firm work and corporate counsel duties, a path that provided both courtroom and business context for legal decision-making. Colleagues say he brings an analytical approach informed by training in multiple disciplines, and that he adapts to roles that require both technical reading and legal writing.
As of 2026 he maintains an active practice and membership in several bar associations, handling matters across the jurisdictions in which he is licensed and combining his legal work with his background in architecture.
