About John E.
John E. Cutler built a legal foundation at Brigham Young University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 1986 and went on to receive his Juris Doctor from the J. Reuben Clark Law School in 1989. He began his professional training immediately after law school, serving as a law clerk to Chief Bankruptcy Judge Robert G. Mooreman at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Arizona in 1989. That early exposure to federal bankruptcy proceedings shaped his approach to courtroom procedure and legal research.
In 1991 Cutler moved into public service as a deputy prosecuting attorney in Bonneville County, Idaho. The courtroom work there gave him front-line experience in criminal practice and trial preparation. He later joined the private firm Cooper Wetzel Avery & Lee in 1995, expanding his civil and criminal practice in a firm setting and taking on more complex litigation matters.
Cutler opened Cutler Law Office, P.A., in 2003. He has run the firm since then, representing clients in state and federal matters. He is admitted to practice in Idaho and in the Ninth Circuit. Over the years he has handled a mix of criminal defense work and related trial matters, bringing his trial experience from public prosecution and private practice to defense work.
His training includes several National Highway Traffic Safety Administration courses through La Pier & Associates: the Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) program, the Standardized Field Sobriety Testing and DUI Detection Instructor course, and the Standardized Field Sobriety Testing and DUI Detection student course. Those certifications underpin a significant portion of his casework, particularly in DUI defense, where technical evidence and officer procedures are often central.
Cutler is active in professional circles. He has been a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers since 2003 and joined the National Trial Lawyers in 2017. He has been a member of the Idaho Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers since 2001. He joined the National College of DUI Defense in 2008 and has served as a state delegate for that organization since 2018. He is a founding member of the DUI Defense Lawyers Association, serving there since 2014. His practice at Cutler Law Office, P.A. concentrates on DUI defense and criminal cases.
