About John

John DeVito graduated from Suffolk University Law School with a J.D. in 1974. He entered the profession at a time when courthouse routines and legal practice were less computerized and more paper-driven. That early training shaped a methodical approach to litigation and client work that has carried through a long career.

After law school DeVito built a practice that encompassed both state and federal courts. He is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and before the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. He also holds admission to the bar of the United States Supreme Court, a credential that signals experience handling matters that reach the appellate level.

In 1986 he served as a staff lawyer for the Norfolk County Bar Advocates. That role placed him in a public-service setting, handling cases and helping coordinate legal assistance for local litigants. The position added a layer of courtroom and client-facing experience to work he had been doing in private and public settings.

Over the decades DeVito worked across a range of matters that required facility in both trial and appellate procedures. His practice has involved filings in state superior courts and appearances in federal courts. He developed habits useful to appellate work: precise record review, careful briefing and a focus on clear oral argument. Colleagues would describe him as steady in the courtroom and exacting in preparation.

He kept a steady presence in the New England legal community through local court work and periodic federal filings. DeVito’s admissions to multiple jurisdictions meant he could take cases that moved from state trial courts to federal appellate panels. That flexibility shaped the kind of matters he pursued and the clients he advised.

Now in the later phase of his career, DeVito continues to practice law. He remains an active participant in cases that touch both Massachusetts law and federal appellate issues. His experience from the 1970s onward informs the way he prepares cases, reads appellate records and advises clients on litigation strategy. As of 2026 his practice focuses on matters in Massachusetts and in the federal courts, including appellate work.
