About John Charles

John Charles Bateman built a practice on courtroom work and technical know-how. He studied history as an undergraduate and went on to law school before beginning service as a judge advocate. The early years shaped how he approaches evidence and procedure.

He earned a B.A. in history from Davidson College and a J.D. from the University of Richmond School of Law. Those degrees bookend an academic path that emphasized critical reading and proof-based argument. The classroom work gave way quickly to the demands of military law.

Bateman entered the United States Army as a Judge Advocate in 2008. That role put him inside military justice systems and exposed him to high-pressure hearings. He handled investigations, advised commanders, and argued cases. The position required him to work under tight timelines and to master both rules of evidence and the nuances of military procedure.

After leaving active service he moved into private practice. In 2013 he became a partner at The Bateman Law Office. His work there has centered on criminal defense, and he has handled many matters involving impaired driving and related technical issues. Cases often depend on precise testing protocols, and his practice reflects that reality.

Certifications anchor much of his day-to-day work. He holds multiple NHTSA credentials, including Standardized Field Sobriety Testing and Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement. He is also certified as an instructor in those techniques and has completed a Datamaster DMT three-day supervisor course. Those qualifications allow him to examine the training and procedures behind breath and field tests.

Bateman is active in professional circles. He has been a member of the North Carolina Bar since 2008 and holds memberships in state and national defense organizations, including the National College of DUI Defense and the DUI Defense Lawyers Association. He also belongs to the South Carolina Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and local Greenville and Greenville-area defense groups. He maintains contacts across both Carolinas.

He is licensed to practice in South Carolina and North Carolina and manages files primarily from the Greenville office, while also serving clients through Spartanburg and Clemson offices. His practice combines courtroom work, technical scrutiny of testing methods, and direct client advocacy.

He currently handles criminal defense and impaired driving cases from offices in Greenville, Spartanburg, and Clemson.
