John Burnett earned his J.D. from the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Law in 1978. He completed his legal education at a time when the profession was undergoing significant change. The degree set the stage for a career that has spanned private practice and public service in Missouri.
He opened Burnett Law Offices in 1978, starting a private practice that would form the backbone of his professional life. Over the following decades he handled a range of matters for clients in state courts. Burnett moved into public office in 2002 when he served in the Missouri House of Representatives. His time in the legislature added a layer of policy and lawmaking experience to his resume.
