About Joe

Joe Conroy built his path to the law in classrooms on both sides of the East Coast. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Commerce from the University of Virginia in 1983, then continued on to Boston University School of Law, where he received his J.D. in 1986. Those years set the stage for a career that moved between client work and firm leadership.

After law school, Conroy began practicing in matters that required close attention to commercial detail. He is admitted to practice in Virginia. Over time he gravitated toward transactional work and corporate representation. The technical demands of that work and the need to manage complex client relationships shaped his approach to the practice of law.

Conroy spent much of his career at Cooley Godward Kronish LLP, where he rose to the role of Partner-CEO. In that position he ran day-to-day operations while remaining engaged on client matters. The role required balancing management tasks—budgets, personnel and firm strategy—with the pressures of major transactions and the expectations of outside counsel. Colleagues recall an emphasis on practical problem solving and steady management rather than flashy pronouncements.

On the transactional side, Conroy’s work has involved corporate clients and business deals that require both legal precision and commercial judgment. He has guided clients through negotiations, drafting and the structuring of agreements. He has also overseen teams of lawyers working on multifaceted matters. That mix of work—hands-on legal drafting and higher-level supervision—became a hallmark of his practice.

Leadership at a large firm can shift a lawyer’s daily routine. For Conroy, taking on the Partner-CEO role meant stepping back from some types of hands-on work while amplifying his impact on firm culture and priorities. He participated in decisions about resource allocation and staffing. At the same time he continued to advise clients, drawing on years of transactional experience.

Outside of client files, Conroy’s record shows sustained involvement in the administrative side of law practice. He has navigated the competing demands of growing a practice and keeping a large organization running. Those responsibilities informed how he mentored junior lawyers and allocated work across teams.

Today Conroy continues to practice law in Virginia, combining experience in corporate transactions and firm management. His current practice focuses on corporate and transactional work for business clients.
