About Jeremiah

Jeremiah Meyer-O’Day built his legal foundation with degrees in liberal arts, psychology and law. He earned an A.A.S. in liberal arts from the University of Wisconsin Center—Washington County in 1998, a B.A. in psychology and sociology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2010, and a J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law in 2013.

His early legal work overlapped with law school and the months that followed. In 2013 he volunteered at the UW Law School Unemployment Appeals Clinic and worked as a mortgage analyst for the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Consumer Protection Unit. Those roles exposed him to administrative hearings and consumer-facing investigations, and they informed how he approached client interviews and case preparation in later years.

After a year at Lagmann, Inc. in 2014, Meyer-O’Day moved into public defense. He joined the Office of the State Public Defender of Wisconsin as an assistant state public defender in 2015. There he handled criminal matters for clients unable to retain private counsel. The public defender role put him in court regularly, managing cases from initial appearances through trial and sentencing stages.

In 2018 he joined Martinez & Ruby, LLP as an associate lawyer. At the firm he has continued to handle criminal defense work while also drawing on his background in consumer protection and administrative appeals. His courtroom experience and earlier agency work give him a practical sense of how prosecutors and regulators build their cases, which informs how he prepares defenses and negotiates outcomes.

Meyer-O’Day is licensed to practice in Wisconsin and before the Western District of Wisconsin. He has been an active member of the Wisconsin Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers since 2013. That association work has kept him connected to peers across the state and current developments in criminal law practice.

Colleagues describe him as methodical in preparation and clear in court. Clients see someone who has moved between agency work, public defense and private practice, and who draws on those different perspectives when evaluating a case. He currently practices at Martinez & Ruby, LLP, where his work centers on criminal defense and related matters.
