About Jean
Jean Humbrecht runs a small law firm in Virginia and has spent more than a decade moving between courtrooms, public service and local civic groups. She balances trial work and appellate matters. Her path combines public defender work, federal congressional service and private practice.
She earned an LL.M. in Litigation from The George Washington University Law School in 2014 after completing graduate work there. Earlier, she received her J.D. from Ave Maria School of Law in 2010, having begun law school in 2007. Those degrees underpin a practice grounded in courtroom procedure and appellate briefing.
Her early legal experience was rooted in public defense and legal services. In 2008 she served as an extern with the Washtenaw County Public Defender and the following year worked as a law clerk for Legal Services of South Central Michigan. In 2011 she accepted a counsel position with the United States House of Representatives, a role that exposed her to federal process and legislative work. By 2014 she opened Humbrecht Law, P.L.L.C., where she has served as principal lawyer since then.
Humbrecht holds a Virginia Indigent Defense Commission certification. She is admitted to practice in Virginia and before the Federal Circuit. Her bar and court admissions allow her to handle both trial-level criminal matters and appeals. Over the years she has combined courtroom advocacy with appellate filings and client counseling.
Beyond casework, she has been active in professional and community organizations. She has been involved with the Prince William County Bar Association since 2016, serving on its Criminal Law and CLE committees. She served on the board of the Virginia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers from 2019 to 2021 and remains a member. Local business groups and chambers have also figured in her activities; she has held board roles and event leadership positions in area chambers and associations. Toastmasters groups appear frequently among her memberships, including a vice president of education role in 2024.
Over time her work has remained steady and community-oriented. She leads a small practice that draws on trial experience, indigent defense certification and appellate admission. She currently focuses her practice on criminal defense, indigent defense representation, and trial and appellate litigation.
