About Jason

Jason Canfield earned his J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 2010. He arrived at law school after undergraduate studies and left with a law degree at a time when the legal landscape was shifting. The degree set the stage for a career grounded in litigation and appellate work in Wisconsin.

Almost immediately after law school, Canfield entered private practice. By 2011 he was a partner at Canfield & Lutz, LLC. That early move into partnership shaped the rest of his career. Over the years he has worked on matters that require both courtroom presence and appellate briefing.

Canfield is admitted to practice in Wisconsin and before the Federal Circuit. That dual jurisdictional standing signals regular engagement with both state-court disputes and federal appellate matters. He has experience preparing federal filings and arguing procedural and substantive issues on appeal, and he regularly handles the kinds of filings that appellate practice requires.

Colleagues describe him as a lawyer who breaks problems down into manageable pieces. He approaches cases firmly but without theatrics. He writes for judges and juries, drafting motions and briefs that aim to be clear and concise. In the office he mentors younger lawyers and helps shape litigation strategy. In court he focuses on presenting the facts and law in a straightforward way.

The firm where he is a partner, Canfield & Lutz, LLC, handles a mix of civil matters that bring together trial and appellate work. Canfield’s practice includes preparing records for appeal, managing federal filings, and representing clients in state-court proceedings that often require coordination across venues. He has seen cases through both trial and appeal, and he brings that continuity to each matter.

Outside the courtroom he participates in the routine demands of running a small firm: client intake, case management, and supervising a docket that can span municipal filings to federal appellate briefs. He has navigated evolving procedural rules and the shifting expectations of appellate panels. The result is a practice that combines courtroom work, appellate advocacy, and the daily operations of a litigation-focused firm.

He currently practices at Canfield & Lutz, LLC, handling matters in Wisconsin and before the Federal Circuit.
