About Jason

Jason Amsel trained first as an engineer. He earned a B.S. in electrical and computer engineering from Cornell in 2005 and a master of engineering in the same field in 2006. He then turned to the law and completed his J.D. at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law in 2011. The combination of technical and legal education shapes the way he approaches patent work.

He began his practice life at Fenwick & West LLP. In 2006 he joined Fenwick as a patent agent. After law school he returned to a patent role at the same firm as a patent lawyer in 2011. During his years there he worked on patent matters for companies in the technology sector, handling prosecution and related patent tasks for clients at different stages of growth.

In 2021 he started Amsel IP Law PLLC and became its founder and principal lawyer. The move put him in charge of a small practice aimed at serving inventors and companies that need patent counseling and prosecution. Running a boutique firm gave him direct responsibility for client relationships and for translating technical inventions into claim language that can survive examination.

He is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and holds membership in the State Bar of California and the State Bar of Texas. He also participates in local professional circles, including the Austin Intellectual Property Law Association. Outside the office he mentors at Capital Factory, the Austin Tech Incubator, and MassChallenge, advising startup founders on how to think about intellectual property as they develop products and seek investment.

Amsel’s background in electrical and computer engineering frequently informs his casework. He handles patent prosecution and counsels on portfolio strategy and freedom-to-operate questions, especially in electrical and software-related technologies. His engineering training helps him translate detailed technical concepts into patent claims and craft arguments for patent examiners.

Today he leads Amsel IP Law PLLC, representing clients before the USPTO and advising technology companies and inventors on patent matters. He maintains active bar memberships and continues to mentor early-stage companies on intellectual property strategy.
