About Jared Michael
Jared Michael Richards built a steady bridge from technology to the law. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Information Systems from Brigham Young University in 2002 and completed his Juris Doctor at the University of Utah in 2005. The combination of technical training and legal education has shaped the arc of his career.
He is licensed to practice in Utah. Early in his professional life he joined a Salt Lake City firm and by 2008 was working as a lawyer at Bennett Tueller Johnson Deere. That position placed him in a firm known for handling business law matters across a range of industries.
Richards’s résumé shows active involvement beyond firm work. Since 2010 he has served as a trustee of LaunchUp and taken on advisory roles at BoomStartup and uSpark Foundry as their legal advisor. Those roles have kept him close to founders and early-stage organizations, where legal questions often intersect with business planning and funding.
Colleagues describe him as practical and detail-oriented in matters that require both legal judgment and an understanding of technical systems. His undergraduate training in information systems gives him a different starting point than many lawyers. He can follow conversations about product development, data systems and intellectual property in ways that make his counsel more immediately useful to entrepreneurs.
At Bennett Tueller Johnson Deere, Richards has advised clients on a variety of business matters. He regularly handles issues that arise in the lifecycle of small companies: entity formation, contractual arrangements, and governance questions. He also assists business owners who are thinking through strategic growth and the legal structures that support it.
Outside the firm, his long-term ties to startup incubators and support organizations have made him a familiar figure to founders seeking practical legal guidance. He moves comfortably between boardroom questions and the documents that make business relationships work. The work is often collaborative and hands-on, and it requires translating legal concepts into clear next steps for nonlawyers.
He continues to practice at Bennett Tueller Johnson Deere in Utah, balancing firm responsibilities with ongoing advisory work for LaunchUp, BoomStartup and uSpark Foundry. He currently focuses his practice on advising startups, entrepreneurs and businesses on legal and corporate matters.
