About James Scott Jake
James Scott Jake Gilbreath built a legal path that began in the classroom. He earned a B.A. at George Washington University’s Mount Vernon campus and went on to study law at The University of Texas School of Law. Those schools set the stage for a career concentrated on family law and courtroom work.
After law school, Gilbreath joined Piper & Turner, PLLC as a lawyer in 2009. He worked there early in his career, handling client matters and gaining trial experience. In 2014 he moved into a partnership role at Walters Gilbreath, PLLC. That shift marked a transition from associate-level duties to firm leadership and case responsibility.
Gilbreath is Board Certified in Family Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He also completed trial training through the Family Law Advocacy Institute at the National Institute for Trial Advocacy. Those credentials reflect formal preparation for contested hearings and courtroom trial work rather than an emphasis on transactional family matters alone.
His professional associations track a steady involvement in local and state bar activities. He has been a member of the State Bar of Texas since 2009 and joined the State Bar of Texas LGBT Section in 2014. He also holds memberships in the Travis County Bar Association Family Law Section, the State Bar of Texas Pro Bono College, the Texas Counsel on Family Violence, the Williamson County Bar Association, the Austin Bar Association, the Austin Young Lawyers Association, and the State Bar of Texas Family Law Section. These memberships indicate regular engagement with peers, continuing education, and community-oriented bar programs.
Colleagues describe Gilbreath as someone who handles litigation and client counseling in family law matters. His Board Certification signals specialized training and testing in family law subjects. The NITA trial training adds practical trial skills to his credentials, which shapes how he prepares cases and presents them in court.
Outside of courtroom work, his association memberships suggest involvement with domestic violence resources and pro bono initiatives. His participation in both county and state bar sections points to a practice that operates at the local level while staying connected to statewide developments in family law.
As of 2026 Gilbreath practices at Walters Gilbreath, PLLC, where he handles family law cases and related courtroom matters. His current practice focuses on family law, trial preparation, and representation in contested proceedings.
