About James H. Snyder
James H. Snyder Jr. studied at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville before beginning a career that has spanned courtrooms and clerk offices across the state. His academic background anchored an early move into appellate work and public service.
He began his legal work as a judicial clerk at the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals in 1987. The role put him close to the appellate process and offered a steady apprenticeship in legal reasoning and opinion-writing. A few years later he shifted to the prosecutorial side, serving in the Blount County District Attorney General's office as an assistant in 1990. That post exposed him to courtroom practice and case management in the trial courts.
In 1996 Snyder took on two roles that would define the next phase of his career. He served as a referee at the Blount County Juvenile Court, working on matters that required attention to procedure and the particular needs of young people in the justice system.
