About James D.

James D. Prescott earned both his undergraduate and law degrees from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center at Louisiana State University. He completed a B.S. in Finance in 2001 and returned to the same institution for his J.D., which he received in 2005. Those years in Baton Rouge shaped his early understanding of both business and the law.

His career moved into private practice after graduation. In 2008 he joined Bland & Partners, where he worked on matters handled by that office. A decade after his law degree he became a partner at Gordon, Rees, Scully, Mansukhani in 2018. The following year he became affiliated with the Law Office of James D. Prescott, III LLC, where he maintains an office.

Prescott is admitted to practice in Louisiana and Texas and is also authorized in several federal courts. His federal admissions include the U.S. District Courts for the Western, Eastern and Middle Districts of Louisiana and an appellate admission to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. That mix of state and federal registrations allows him to work on cases at trial and on appeal across those jurisdictions.

Colleagues describe Prescott as a lawyer who spends much of his time in courtrooms and in the preparation that leads there. He handles litigation that proceeds through trial-level proceedings and into appellate review. His practice reflects frequent engagement with procedural and evidentiary questions that arise when cases move beyond initial filings. He also appears in matters that require coordination between state and federal practice.

Over the years Prescott has moved between firm settings and his own office. The change from a larger national firm to his namesake office altered his day-to-day practice, giving him greater control over case selection and courtroom strategy. He has continued to represent clients in contested hearings and in appellate proceedings since that transition.

Prescott’s work draws on his undergraduate background in finance and his years in litigation. He combines courtroom experience in Louisiana and federal courts with the procedural posture needed for appeals in the Fifth Circuit. He currently practices through the Law Office of James D. Prescott, III LLC, focusing on litigation in Louisiana and federal courts within the Fifth Circuit.
