About James A. Fowler
James A. Fowler Jr. went from a small college campus in Virginia to courtrooms across Florida. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Ferrum College in 2002, where he served on the Judicial Review Board. He returned to school in Florida and received his J.D. from Florida Coastal School of Law in 2008. Those years laid the groundwork for work that would move between prosecution and defense.
He began his legal career in 2008 as an associate at Syprett, Meshad, Resnick & Lieb, PA. Two years later he joined the Office of the State Lawyer as a prosecuting attorney, handling matters at the county level. That prosecutorial period included specialized training through the Florida Traffic Safety Resource Prosecution Program, where he completed courses on prosecuting the drugged driver, prosecuting the DUI refusal case, and pretrial DUI motion practice. In 2012 he worked as an associate at Michael S. Perry, P.A., then launched the Fowler Law Group and became managing partner in 2013.
Courtroom work on both sides of the aisle has shaped the way he approaches cases. His time as a prosecutor gave him insight into how cases are built before trial. That experience informs his defense strategy now. He handles DUI cases, traffic offenses, and other criminal matters. His certifications from the traffic safety resource program reflect a concentration in impaired-driving cases and related pretrial litigation.
Professional involvement has followed his practice. He joined the Florida Bar in 2008 and has been active in the Sarasota County Bar Association since then. He has held a seat on the Board of Directors of the Sarasota County Bar Association Young Lawyers Division and holds memberships in the Sarasota chapter of the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the National College for DUI Defense. He is also a member of the Sarasota County American Inn of Court.
Outside of court, Fowler has taken on community roles. He volunteered with Make-A-Wish beginning in 2011 and served as a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sarasota from 2008 to 2011. His early leadership at Ferrum College hinted at that civic side.
Fowler maintains offices in Sarasota and Bradenton. He runs a small litigation practice that focuses on criminal defense and DUI representation in Florida state courts.
