About Jacob Spencer Gunter
Jacob Spencer Gunter Lambert built a legal foundation over two degrees and two decades of practice. He earned a B.S. in political science from Utah State University in 1997 and completed his J.D. at Western Michigan University Cooley Law School in 2004. Those years set the stage for a career split between civilian practice and military service.
He opened his own law office in 2004, practicing under the name Jacob S. Gunter, Attorney at Law. Four years later he entered military service as a judge advocate. That move added a different dimension to his work. He has served as a judge advocate in the Utah Army National Guard since 2008 and later joined the United States Army Reserves, where he holds the rank of major as of 2017.
Lambert moved into firm leadership in 2015 when he became a shareholder at Howard Lewis & Petersen, P.C. His time there followed years in solo practice and years in uniform. He has combined courtroom experience in civilian courts with duties that come from military legal work. The combination has shaped how he approaches cases and client counseling.
On the professional front he has been active in local and state bar organizations. He served as president of the Central Utah Bar Association from 2017 to 2018. He has been a member of the Utah Association for Justice since 2008 and maintains membership in the Utah Bar. He is also admitted to practice in Michigan and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.
Colleagues describe his path as steady rather than sudden. He transitioned from a one‑lawyer shop to a shareholder role while continuing military obligations in the Guard and Reserves. That split career requires juggling client calendars, court dates and service commitments. It also means he brings courtroom familiarity from multiple systems to his civilian practice.
He now works out of the offices of Howard Lewis & Petersen, P.C. His practice blends the procedural demands of state and federal litigation with perspectives formed by years in military legal service. He is currently practicing at Howard Lewis & Petersen, P.C., handling matters in state and federal courts and providing legal services informed by his military experience.
