About J. Michael

J. Michael Bishop earned his J.D. from Mercer University’s Walter F. George School of Law in 1984. He finished law school at a time of change in the legal profession. He entered practice as the nation moved into a new era of litigation and corporate regulation.

He built a steady career in private practice. Over the years he has worked on matters that reached both state and federal forums. Colleagues describe him as methodical in the way he prepares cases and clear in the way he explains legal options to clients. He has remained in practice through decades of shifting legal standards and courtroom procedure.

His name appears in the firm title at Smiley Bishop & Porter LLP. That placement reflects a long association with the firm and a prominent role in its daily work. At the firm he has taken on both trial assignments and client counseling. He often handles complex procedural aspects of cases and manages communications between clients and opposing counsel.

Bishop’s legal training at Mercer provided a foundation in constitutional and appellate principles as well as trial advocacy. Those early lessons have informed his approach to fact development and legal research. He brings that training to client conferences, where he breaks down technical points into practical choices. He also mentors younger attorneys at the firm, helping them adapt courtroom techniques to contemporary practice.

Outside of individual matters, Bishop keeps pace with changes in case law and procedure. He reads decisions and attends continuing-education programs to stay current. That work helps him make timely assessments about case strategy and settlement posture. Peers rely on his experience when cases present procedural twists or tight deadlines.

He currently practices at Smiley Bishop & Porter LLP, concentrating on client representation and advisory work.
