About J. Edward
J. Edward Jones earned his law degree from the University of the Pacific in 1992 after completing undergraduate studies at Brigham Young University in 1986. His time in law school coincided with a period of shifting court practices and rising attention to appellate work. The training he received set the tone for a career that would mix trial work and appeals.
Early in his career Jones took a position as a deputy district lawyer in 1996 at the Pleacer County District Lawyer s Office. That post put him in regular contact with courtroom procedure and case management. He handled matters that required both quick judgments and detailed preparation. Those years helped shape how he approaches case strategy today.
In 2007 he opened his own practice, listed as The Law Office f J. Edward Jones. Since then he has taken on criminal defense matters, appeals and federal filings. He serves on panels that deal with appointed representation and indigent defense, including the Central California Appellate Project Panel and the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah CJA panel. Those roles have kept appellate issues and federal procedure in steady practice.
Jones is admitted to practice in several jurisdictions. They include the U.S. Supreme Court, the Federal Circuit, the 9th Circuit and the 10th Circuit, as well as the states of California and Utah. He has maintained continuous membership in the California Bar since 1995. His federal admissions allow him to move between trial and appellate work across multiple courts.
Professional involvement has been a visible part of his career. He has belonged to the American Bar Association since 1993 and joined the Utah State Bar Association and several county bar associations in 2008. He has been a member of the Utah Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers since 2008 and sits in local bar groups including the Park City, Salt Lake County and Wasatch County bar associations. In 2014 he took on the presidency of the Wasatch County Bar Association and remains in that role.
Colleagues point to his steady presence on appellate panels and in court-appointed defense work as a throughline in his practice. He combines courtroom experience and appellate procedure in cases that move between trial courts and higher tribunals. He currently practices at The Law Office f J. Edward Jones, where he concentrates on criminal defense, appellate work and federal court litigation.
