About Hill
Hill Allen built a legal career that moves steadily between courtrooms and conference rooms. He began his formal legal education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1992. Those years set the stage for immediate entry into practice.
Fresh out of law school, Allen joined Hunton & Williams LLP as an associate in 1992. He spent his early years there learning litigation practice at a large firm. In 1997 he left to join Tharrington Smith, LLP and became a partner, a position he has held since. The move marked a shift into a smaller firm setting where he took on a broader range of responsibilities.
Over more than three decades in practice, Allen has established a steady presence in North Carolina’s legal community. He is admitted to practice in North Carolina and holds memberships in several federal courts, including the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the U.S. District Courts for the Western, Eastern and Middle Districts of North Carolina. Those memberships reflect a practice that regularly handles filings and hearings in federal fora as well as state courts.
Allen’s professional affiliations include long-standing ties to the North Carolina Bar Association and the American Bar Association, both since 1992. He is active in the Bar’s Criminal Justice and Litigation sections. He also joined Advocates for Justice in 1998 and remains a member. These associations anchor him in the statewide legal dialogue and provide regular contact with peers who handle trial work and appellate matters.
Colleagues describe Allen as dependable in managing cases that progress from initial pleadings to trial or appeal. He handles pretrial strategy, motion practice and courtroom hearings. He is comfortable in both bench and jury settings, and in the procedural demands of federal litigation. His practice has involved contested hearings, dispositive motions and appellate filings.
Allen continues to practice from Tharrington Smith, LLP, where he divides his time between client meetings, court appearances and supervising case preparation. He maintains an active docket in North Carolina courts and in the federal courts where he holds membership. He currently practices courtroom litigation in North Carolina state and federal courts.
