About Herbert Jeffrey

Herbert Jeffrey Gilles earned his B.A. from Michigan State University before returning to the same campus for his legal education. He received his J.D. from Michigan State University College of Law in 1981. Those years set the foundation for a long career practicing in multiple state and federal courts.

He moved into private practice after law school and for a substantial portion of his career has been associated with Wilson Elser. That affiliation places him in a firm known for handling a range of civil matters. Over the years he has maintained a practice that engages both trial and appellate work in courts where he holds admission.

Gilles is admitted to practice in Michigan and in Texas. His federal admissions are broad. They include the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan and the Northern District of Texas, as well as the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Texas. He is also admitted to the U.S. District Courts for the Southern, Eastern and Western Districts of Texas. He holds membership in the Michigan State Bar and the State Bar of Texas.

Those credentials inform the shape of his caseload. Being admitted across several federal districts allows him to appear in both state and federal court. He handles matters that require courtroom appearances in the jurisdictions listed on his admissions record. Colleagues describe him as steady in litigation settings and thorough in case preparation.

Outside the courtroom, Gilles’s background links him to two legal communities by education and licensure. He returns often to matters that echo the practical needs of corporate and individual clients who must navigate state and federal procedures. His decades in practice have given him familiarity with procedural nuances across multiple districts.

He currently practices at Wilson Elser, representing clients in matters arising in the state and federal courts where he is admitted. His current practice focuses on matters brought in those jurisdictions.
