About Heather

Heather Lynn Slotnick is a licensed attorney admitted to practice law in the State of California. She was admitted to the California State Bar in 1994. Her license is currently in active status. Ms. Slotnick is the managing partner at MLO, a professional corporation, located at 9920 Pacific Heights Blvd, Suite 150, San Diego, CA 92121-4361. She has been practicing law for over 32 years, serving clients throughout the San Diego area and beyond.

Ms. Slotnick earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering with a Minor in Management (Cum Laude) from Kettering University in Flint, Michigan, in 1991. She then obtained her Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1993. During her time at the University of Michigan, she developed a strong foundation in intellectual property law, which has been central to her legal career.

Ms. Slotnick specializes in intellectual property law, focusing on patents and trademarks. She represents clients in various stages of legal proceedings, including patent prosecution, patent litigation, trademark registration, and trademark litigation. Her practice encompasses all stages of litigation, from initial case evaluation and discovery to settlement negotiations and trial proceedings in both state and federal courts.

Throughout her career, Ms. Slotnick has handled cases in the Superior Court of California for the County of San Diego, the United States District Court for the Southern District of California, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. She has also appeared before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in various matters. Prior to founding MLO, she served as Associate Chief IP Counsel at Siemens Corporation, where she managed complex IP issues and led patent license negotiations. She began her legal career at Townsend and Townsend (now Kilpatrick Townsend) as a member of the Electrical and Electronics Patent Prosecution Group.

Ms. Slotnick is an active member of the California State Bar and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. She has been recognized with the highest possible peer review rating in both legal ability and ethical standards by Martindale-Hubbell, earning the AV Preeminent rating in 2024, 2025, and 2026. She is also a member of the Excellerators Cabinet for the Salk Institute and serves as a mentor for StartR Inclusion at UCSD. Additionally, she volunteers at the Community Resource Center in North San Diego County, supporting initiatives that provide healthy food, stable homes, and safe relationships.
