About Heather

Heather Nelson is a dedicated family law attorney practicing at Heather L — Nelson Law, S.C., located at 840 Lake Avenue, Suite 104, in Racine, Wisconsin. Since joining the State Bar of Wisconsin in 2013, she has focused her legal practice on a range of family law issues, including divorce, legal separation, child custody, child support, paternity, and post-judgment matters. Her firm serves clients across Racine, Kenosha, and Walworth counties, providing comprehensive legal support tailored to the needs of families. In 2012, Heather earned her Juris Doctor (J.D.) from William Mitchell College of Law, where she developed a strong foundation in family law. Prior to her law degree, she completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, graduating in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Legal Studies and Political Science, along with a Certificate in Criminal Justice. Her academic background equips her with a understanding of the legal system, which she applies to her practice daily.

During her time in law school, Heather gained inexperience by interning for the Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation. This role allowed her to engage with complex legal issues and deepen her understanding of criminal justice. Additionally, she broadened her perspective on international law and criminal justice during her studies in London, England. These experiences have enriched her approach to family law, particularly in cases involving intricate custody and support disputes. Most of Heather's caseload consists of divorce proceedings, child custody disputes, and child support cases. She also manages paternity actions and the modification or enforcement of prior orders.

Cases typically progress from initial filing through mediation and court hearings, and when necessary, she is prepared to handle appeals. Her experience in family law enables her to navigate these processes effectively, ensuring that her clients receive the best possible outcomes. Before founding Heather L. Nelson Law, S.C. in 2018, Heather worked as an associate attorney at a family law firm in Kenosha County. She later became a managing partner and shareholder at a family law firm in Racine County, where she developed her skills in litigation and client advocacy.

In the same year, she served as a Guardian ad Litem for Racine County, further demonstrating her commitment to protecting the best interests of children in legal proceedings. Heather is an active member of the Wisconsin State Bar Association, Racine County Bar Association, and Kenosha County Bar Association. In 2017, she was recognized by the National Academy of Family Law Attorneys as one of the "Top 10 Under 40," highlighting her dedication and expertise in family law. Fluent in English and conversational Spanish, Heather is well-equipped to serve clients in her community.
