About H. Edwin

H. Edwin Detlie began his path in law after completing undergraduate studies in history and political science at Simpson College. He went on to earn his J.D. from The George Washington University Law School. The combination of a liberal arts background and a Washington, D.C., legal education shaped a practice that bridges trial work and appellate procedure.

Early in his career, Detlie concentrated on matters that intersect workplace injury law and broader practice management concerns. He holds admission to the Iowa bar and is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court and the Eighth Circuit. Those admissions reflect a career that has included both trial-level advocacy and filings beyond the state courts.

Colleagues have known him for active participation in professional organizations. He served as president of the Iowa Association of Workers’ Compensation Lawyers from 2004 to 2005. That role placed him in the middle of the state’s conversations about workers’ compensation policy, practice rules, and case law developments. Beginning in 2009 he took on leadership in the Iowa State Bar Association as chair of the Law Practice Management Committee, a post he has continued to hold. That committee work involves advising on the operational side of running a law practice, ethics, and efficiency—areas that often inform how lawyers handle client matters.

Detlie’s work has a practical bent. He spent much of his professional life handling workers’ compensation claims, representing employers, insurers, and occasionally claimants in administrative hearings and contested matters. He also moved matters through appellate channels when questions of law required higher-court review. His courtroom experience and appellate admissions mean he is comfortable preparing record-based appeals and arguing questions of statutory interpretation.

Outside formal titles, Detlie has contributed to the statewide dialogue about how law firms operate and how the workers’ compensation system serves its participants. His leadership roles signaled a willingness to engage with peers on rules, training, and the business of law. He has maintained a regular presence at association meetings and committee gatherings where practitioners exchange practical solutions to day-to-day problems.

As of 2026, Detlie continues to practice in Iowa. He maintains admissions to the U.S. Supreme Court and the Eighth Circuit and practices primarily in matters related to workers’ compensation and appellate work arising from those claims.
