About Gerard B.

Gerard B. Carney earned his J.D. from Suffolk University Law School in 1980 after completing a B.S. at Boston College in 1971. His legal education laid the groundwork for a practice that has spanned state and federal courts for more than four decades.

He began his legal career after admission to the Massachusetts bar in 1980. Over the years he added admissions to the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island, the First Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. Those credentials have allowed him to take cases across different levels of the judiciary and to appear in a variety of forums.

Mr. Carney founded Carney, Rezendes & Crowley, LLC, where he built a practice that handles litigation in both state and federal arenas. He has maintained an active role at the firm, guiding cases from pleading through trial. His practice includes courtroom work and appellate filings, reflecting experience in both trial strategy and post-trial procedure.

He is a member of professional organizations that mirror his courtroom practice. He holds memberships in the Massachusetts Bar Association and the Massachusetts State Bar, where his affiliation dates to 1980. He is also listed with the Massachusetts Academy of Trial Lawyers and the American Association for Justice. In addition, he serves on the National Football League Players Association Workers Compensation Panel, a role that involves handling injury and compensation matters for players under that program.

Colleagues and opposing counsel know him for a methodical approach. He tends to break complex questions into straightforward points. That approach applies whether he is briefing an appellate issue before the First Circuit or trying a case in a federal district courtroom. It also shapes how he manages client expectations and prepares witnesses.

Outside the courtroom his work includes drafting pleadings, arguing motions, and participating in settlement negotiations when appropriate. He has practiced continuously since his admission in 1980 and remains an active member of the bar. He currently practices at Carney, Rezendes & Crowley, LLC, where he concentrates on litigation, appellate work, and workers' compensation matters.
