About Genaro Retta
Genaro Retta Cortez built his legal foundation in Texas. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1999. He went on to law school at Texas Tech University School of Law and received his J.D. in 2002. Those years set the stage for a practice rooted in state and federal procedure.
After law school Cortez entered private practice. He sharpened his courtroom skills in early roles before establishing his own office. In 2004 he opened the Law Office of Genaro R. Cortez, PLLC. Since then he has run a solo practice and represented clients across a range of matters that require litigation in trial and appellate forums.
Cortez’s practice has included appearances in federal courts. He is admitted to cases in the Western District of Texas and the Southern District of Texas, and he is authorized to argue before the Fifth Circuit. He also maintains admission to the Texas bar. Those admissions have allowed him to file and manage cases that move between state and federal dockets.
The work of a small firm can vary day to day. Cortez handles pleadings, trials and appeals when matters require them. He prepares pretrial work, argues motions and represents clients at hearings. He has developed procedural familiarity from initial filings through appellate briefs, relying on practical courtroom experience rather than large-firm staffing.
Cortez has participated in local bar and trial lawyer organizations. He joined the San Antonio Trial Lawyers Association in 2023 and remains a member. Local association work has given him additional opportunities to exchange ideas with other trial practitioners and to stay current on evolving practice issues in the region.
Today Cortez practices under the Law Office of Genaro R. Cortez, PLLC and continues to represent clients in both state and federal venues, including the Western and Southern Districts of Texas and the Fifth Circuit.
