About Gena Walling
Gena Walling McCray has built a practice that stitches together courtroom work, court administration and community involvement. She has worked inside county court systems and later set up her own firm where she has handled a range of family and probate matters. Her career shows a steady movement from public service into private practice.
McCray studied at the University of South Carolina, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English and Philosophy in 1992 and a second B.A. in Psychology in 1995. She went on to attend the University of South Carolina School of Law and earned her J.D. in 2003. Those academic years shaped both her attention to written argument and her interest in cases that touch family life.
Her earliest post-law school work was in court administration. In 2004 she served as an Estates Supervisor for the Wake County Clerk of Court. That role put her inside estate and probate systems and allowed her to manage dockets and supervise aspects of estate administration. She moved into private practice the next year, joining Howard Green & Moye as an associate in 2005. The firm work gave her experience handling contested matters and courtroom hearings.
In 2007 she opened her own practice, Gena Walling McCray, PLLC. Since forming the firm she has been admitted to practice in both North Carolina and South Carolina. The North Carolina State Bar has certified her as an NC Family Law Specialist, a recognition that denotes a concentrated practice in family law matters. That credential is part of how colleagues and clients identify the work she takes on.
Outside the office she has stayed involved in local and state legal circles. She has belonged to the North Carolina Bar Association since 2003. She has participated in the 9th Judicial District since 2007 and has been active with the Franklin County Juvenile Justice Crime Prevention program since 2013. Those roles have brought her into juvenile justice discussions and broader district-level court issues.
Today McCray runs her PLLC, where she draws on her county court experience, private practice background and family law certification. She handles family law matters and matters that intersect with probate and juvenile proceeding, and she continues to work in both North Carolina and South Carolina courts. Her current practice centers on family law, probate and juvenile-related cases.
