About Gary K.
Gary K. Springstead built a foundation in political science before turning to law. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Kalamazoo College in 1991. He went on to pursue further studies at the University of Michigan and later attended Wayne State University Law School, where he completed his legal training. Those academic stops shaped a practical approach to courtroom work and client counseling.
He began his legal career in Michigan and over the years concentrated on criminal defense and impaired driving cases. He developed courtroom experience in state trial courts and is admitted to practice in Michigan and before the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. That federal admission broadened the range of appeals and procedural matters he could handle for clients.
Springstead has been active in professional organizations that intersect with criminal defense and DUI law. He joined the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers in 2005. In 2011 he became a member of the National College of DUI Defense and served on the Board of Directors of the Criminal Defense Lawyers of Michigan the same year. In 2014 he joined the Michigan Association of OWI Lawyers. He maintains current memberships in local and national defense groups and takes part in the continuing legal education those groups offer.
Colleagues describe him as someone who prepares cases methodically and who prefers direct, practical advocacy over theatrical courtroom tactics. He handles arraignments, pretrial motions, trials and post-conviction matters. He has represented clients in a range of misdemeanor and felony matters, as well as in OWI and DUI proceedings, and he often works on issues that arise at the intersection of criminal procedure and driver's license consequences.
He practices from Springstead Bartish & Borgula Law, P.L.L.C., with offices in Grand Rapids and Fremont. He splits time between the two locations and represents clients across the region. He currently practices at Springstead Bartish & Borgula Law, P.L.L.C., concentrating on criminal defense and DUI/OWI matters.
